Can you be a real estate agent if you are shy?

Can you be shy and still be successful in real estate?

One of the most common myths about real estate agents is that the absolute best agents are extroverts or are REALLY good Salesman. It makes sense why most people would assume this, an agent who is able to “get out there” and talk with anyone organically would seemingly be able to reach more contacts.

Extroverts seem to just draw people in, they can keep a conversation going for really long times, and it seems like everyone just likes them! It’s easy to be intimidated by the notion that good real estate agents are extroverts. Contrary to popular belief, Introverts can be just as capable as extroverts- and being introverted doesn’t necessarily mean “shy”. Why? Because the core of being a real estate agent is helping people… and you don’t have to be an extrovert to do that!

Being Introverted just means that being around a large group of people can really drain your social battery while Extroverts typically get excited or fueled up by the same idea. Let’s get rid of the notion that being an introvert means you’re shy/anxious/incapable of talking to people.

I also want to encourage you- there are PLENTY of people who need a REALTOR® and they are not all going to mesh with the SAME real estate agent. You are unique and bring something different to the table. Think about the people that you connect with easily, and the traits that they have. Is every person you relate to an extrovert? The answer is more than likely no.

What tips do you have for me, an introvert, to succeed in real estate?

Introverts tend to love their systems, because they know what is going to come next. Be part of our free mentorship program, lean on your colleagues when you’re feeling unsure or uncomfortable, PRACTICE scripts, and perfect your conversion. Develop a system that works for you. When you trust your systems, you’ll be able to move through your processes confidently.

Be self-aware of your strengths and where you struggle. Instead of looking at the things we could work on as weaknesses, see the duality in it and make them work for you. What do I mean by this? If you find that communicate better through written communication, start writing down the things you want to talk about before you call your client- or see if that client likes to communicate via text rather than a phonecall for example. YOU are your own boss in real estate, there’s no single way to run a successful business as a real estate agent.

Being an EFFECTIVE Real Estate agent comes down to learned skills rather than a personality type. Remember that any worries you have over being “shy” don’t really apply to your career as a real estate agent. Knowledge of your local real market, coupled with the desire to help people, supported by the right brokerage will enable to you to reach your real estate goals. Trust yourself.

Real estate may stretch you out of your comfort zone, but over time, it will become easier to speak with potential buyers and sellers.
